Q - How do I tell if members of my team are struggling when I don’t see them every day?

A - When you see your team everyday it is easier to see when they are stuggling, whether with personal or work issues, because you can take cues from their body language. When you don't see them regularly, or only over zoom or a phone call it is much more difficult to detect those little signals which tell you how people are feeling. The answer is to get to know your staff better, probably at a more personal  and emotional level. This could feel uncomfortable for many managers, especially if their preference is to be more task, rather than people, focussed.  Now is the time to develop those soft skills that enable you to manage people in a balanced way - being able to support and challenge them in equal measures.  It is also really important to maintain confidentiality with the information they share, so you build the trust needed for people to open to you when they have issues.
