How long should I give staff on an informal PIP to improve?

Q - If I put an under-performer on an informal PIP (performance improvement plan), how long should I give them to fix the problem before moving to the formal stage and possibly dismissal?

A - (Leadership) As with most situations, “it depends”!  If they have a very straightforward role and the objectives you set at informal PIP are achievable in a few weeks, then that would be the time tomato a decision to move to the next level.  If the objectives you have set are longer term, then you need to give the individual that time to meet them.  Always project yourself into a future tribunal, and what the judge might think about the fairness of any decisions you have made, especially dismissal.
