Our employee of the month scheme isn't working




Q Our employee of the month scheme doesn’t seem to be working.  Why not?


A Let’s assume that the purpose of the scheme is clear - to recognise the best performers, which in turn will motivate others to maintain or increase their performance.  The issue is that not everyone likes public recognition, so a pat on the back (or the employee of the month award) alone is not enough.  Often it is about how the awards are given, and many more people need to understand the difference they have made rather than just receiving an award.  So always explain why the winner is getting the award, and keep it genuine - rotating the award around the team is soon going to be seen through.  The other area to look at is who selects the employe of the month - maybe the employees should do this, at least every now and again.
