I've just had an awful annual review

Q - I’ve just had an awful annual review and don’t know what do to

A - (Firstly, take some time to reflect on the feedback you have just received.  Was it justified?  Did you get any positive feedback?  Were there any surprises?

There should be no surprises when it comes to appraisal time, so if your boss has suddenly thrown one (or more) into the mix then you need to push back.  Feedback needs to be timely and relevant so you have the opportunity to correct any concerns your boss has.

However, if you have heard the feedback before and not done anything about it, then you need to have a good think about why not.  Are you in the wrong role?  Do you need more support or training?

Sometimes we focus too much on the negative feedback and just don’t hear and/or internalise the positives.  Make sure you know when you are doing well and have discussed that with your boss.  Collect feedback from others and make your boss aware of what people think.  This may feel like a waste of time, but if you don’t value yourself, how can you expect others to do so?
