Why have my top talent left, even though we gave retention bonuses?


Q - We gave ‘retention’ bonuses to our top talent less than 6 months ago. Why have some of them still resigned?

A - Not everyone is motivated by money. There are eight other areas to consider, and we all need an element of each of them, just in different amounts. How often do you listen (really listen) to your top talent to understand how engaged they are and whether there are any motivation issues? The problem is that our top talent are our most confident and competent people, so if they are demotivated then they might just respond to any calls they receive. Make the time to understand each individual, and consider profiling their motivation to help you reward them in line with what makes them tick.
